Ear Update

At the ENT visit (5-2-12), it was determined that P still had double ear infections (as we were on the third antibiotic this month). After going over what we had been through in the last month the Dr. gave us a couple of options. He did feel that she would benefit from tubes and agreed with us that she cannot just continue to be on meds and not have any relief. The option we chose was to finish the prescription (we had about 6-7 days left), go back to see our Pediatrician, and if ears were cleared up GREAT! We can buy a little more time for the tubes, but if they were still infected to call him back and schedule tube surgery. My concern that all of this would be detrimental to her health as it has been going on so long, but he assured me since she passed her hearing test and it looked okay she would be fine. He did say though that even if her ears did clear up on this RX, the next ear infection means tubes.
We took her back last Tuesday after we finished up her prescription. I was not going into the appt. very hopeful as no medicine had worked yet, but we would see. The Dr. said the right ear was totally cleared up!! YAY! The left ear still had fluid in it, but it was not the horrible pus kind that she had had all of the weeks prior (this is the one that concerns me since she always grabs her head behind her ear on this side now). We'll take it. She said for us not to do anything for now (but to stay on the allergy medicine as she feels that since we finally got her allergies and cough under control that maybe that will help her ears stay clear.) She did agree with the ENT that as soon as her next infection pops up we are going straight for tubes. She also said with the remaining fluid in her ear it will either flare up and create another infection OR it will just completely heal. So right now it is a waiting game! I am just glad to know she might finally have a little relief and we get to buy a little more time and let her get a little older before we have to have the tubes.
